The Anatomy of a Blue Medora Management Pack

by Brock Peterson on June 21, 2018

Management packs are an efficient and effective way for admins to optimize their cloud-based IT infrastructure by extending and enhancing their management platforms. Management packs are highly popular across the industry with such well-known solutions as Microsoft’s System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), Oracle’s System Monitoring plug-in for Oracle Virtual Networking that extends its Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, and VMware vRealize Operations.

What’s in a management pack?
Specifically, what’s in a Blue Medora management pack for VMware vRealize Operations Manager (vROps)? The adapter itself is the main component, but there are dashboards, content reports, views, smart alerts, and policies as well.

The adapter is the code that actually connects to the target and pulls data for analysis. vROps comes with several VMware adapters including ones for vSphere, vSAN, vRLI, vRBC, vRA, and EpOps.

The vSphere adapter connects to your vCenter/s and pull metrics and properties for ESXi Hosts, VMs, and Datastores. The vROps data analytics engine will then analyze the data and predict outcomes; for example, how much space can be reclaimed by an ESXi Host or when a VM might run out of resources.

The Blue Medora adapters are shown in the same Administration – Solutions pane.

We currently have 49 different management packs and are releasing several new ones each quarter.  A comprehensive list of management packs can be found here:

Gain greater visibility with better dashboards.
The second component of our vROps management packs are dashboards –they are the main vehicle for data publication. Everyone from virtual administration teams to database administrators to executives can use these dashboards to see objects and metrics in context.  I like to call these the “pretty pictures.”

In the vROps 6.6 VMware release there are several new dashboards. In fact, they now have a dashboard of dashboards grouping dashboards as follows: Operations, Capacity and Utilization, Performance Troubleshooting, Workload Balance, and Configuration and Compliance.

Each Blue Medora management pack will also include several dashboards. We like to present higher level insight into each target via overview-type dashboards and dig deeper via more detailed dashboards. We also make relationships from the target technology back to the virtual infrastructure. Our dashboards can be cloned and adjusted to your liking.  Here are the Cisco UCS dashboards that we provide in our management pack:

Our integrations catalog enables you to explore dashboards (and more) for each management pack.

Share data more easily with enhanced reports.
Another way to present data is via reports. These are .csv or .pdf documents containing objects and metrics. We include a handful of reports in each management pack. These can be cloned and adjusted as you wish. The reports included in our HPE Servers management pack are shown here:

Reports are comprised of views, so naturally we provide the views as well, but they can also be cloned and used for your own reports. Here is a list of views for our NetApp FAS management pack:

Address problems faster with a wide range of alerts.
In addition to the adapter, dashboards, reports, and views, our management packs also contain alerts. Alerts are based on industry standard best practices and designed to notify users and administrators of potential problems. Here is the list of alerts in our Microsoft SQL Server management pack.

Alerts can be cloned, adjusted, and use static or dynamic thresholds. Alerts can be configured to notify users via email, text, and SNMP trap forwarding to event management systems, among others.

Determine what to collect and report with easy-to-establish policies.
Finally, we have policies.  As described by VMware, policies are defined as follows:

A policy is a set of rules that you define for vRealize Operations Manager to use to analyze and display information about the objects in your environment. You can create, modify, and administer policies to determine how vRealize Operations Manager displays data in dashboards, views, and reports.

vRealize Operations Manager policies support the operational decisions established for your IT infrastructure and business units. With policies, you control what data vRealize Operations Manager collects and reports on for specific objects in your environment. Each policy can inherit settings from other policies, and you can customize and override various analysis settings, alert definitions, and symptom definitions for specific object types, to support the service Level agreements and business priorities established for your environment.

Each Blue Medora management pack has its own policy which is added to the default policy upon installation.

See how we stack up against the competition.
Blue Medora provides the deepest and richest set of data acquisition and content capabilities delivered out-of-the-box for vROps. And because Blue Medora management packs are relationship-aware, the more you add, the more context you get across your IT system stack.

So go ahead and compare Blue Medora management packs to others available on the VMware Solutions Exchange. Details on Blue Medora management packs can be found in our integrations catalog.
