How to Manually install a VMware ESXi update

by bluemedora_editor on July 9, 2012

In large scale VMware environments it is often preferable to install updates to an ESXi server via VMware update manager. However in some circumstances it may be preferable to install updates manually using a command line interface. Below is a brief account on how to install an update on your ESXi server using esxcli commands. It is assumed that the update has already been downloaded and has either been transferred to your system or to a datastore that your system has access to.

  1. Log into your ESXi system.
  2. Run the following command: esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/[DATASTORE]/[PATCH_FILE].zip
  3. After successfully completing the command you should get a screen that looks similar to this.
