A Guided Install of Oracle Enterprise Manager Management Pack for VMware (Part One)

by bluemedora_editor on December 9, 2015

The Blue Medora Oracle Enterprise Manager Plugin for VMware provides fully integrated continuous monitoring of VMware-based virtualization environments. This blog provides a visual guide for implementing the Oracle Enterprise Manager Plug-in for VMware vSphere environments from Blue Medora. The information provided in this blog series is intended to supplement, not replace, the online User Guide available on the Blue Medora Knowledge Base. The environment used in this walkthrough is Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, version 12.1.0.5.0.
This blog is the first part of a series of blogs on the Oracle Enterprise Manager Plugin for VMware. In part one, we will be covering the installation of the plugin.

  1. Start by requesting a trial download of the VMware vSphere Plug-in from the Blue Medora website. An email will be sent to you with the direct download link as well as trial license key.
  2. Move the downloaded zip onto the target Enterprise Manager system.
  3. Unzip the downloaded zip. In this example the zip is called:

bm.vmware.vsph_12.1.0.9.0_1.0.70.zip

  1. Next you will need to import the VMware vSphere Plugin OPAR file from unzipped media into the Software Library of your Enterprise Manager system. Use the emcli import_update command to import the OPAR file. Please note that an emcli login command may need to be executed. A successful import will result in a return of “Successfully uploaded the update to Enterprise Manager.”

# emcli import_update -file=”/tmp/bm.vmware.vsph_12.1.0.9.0_1.0.70.opar” –omslocal

  1. Log into the Enterprise Manager Cloud Control and navigate to Setup -> Extensibility -> Plug-ins. Expand the Servers, Storage and Network folder, and look for VMware vSphere to confirm that the Plug-in has been successfully downloaded to the Software Repository.

After confirming the VMware vSphere Plug-in was uploaded to EM12c Software Library, we can begin deploying the VMware vSphere Plug-in onto a EM12c Management Server (OMA).

  1. From the EM12c Web UI, navigate to Setup -> Extensibility -> Plug-ins.
  2. Select the VMware Plug-in found in the Servers, Storage, and Network folder, select Actions from the menus and click on Deploy on > Management Servers.
  3. The Deploy Plug-ins on Management Servers: Plug-ins page will appear. Verify the version of the plugin in the To Deploy field and click Next.
  4. The Deploy Plug-ins on Management Servers: Prerequisite Checks page will appear. Allow the checks to complete and resolve any issues that may arise. After all checks are passed, click Next.
  5. Next, the Deploy Plug-ins on Management Servers: Repository page will appear. Use a saved Named credential for the repository SYS credentials or create a New set of credentials. After filling in the username, passwords, and role, select Next to continue the next step of the deployment.
  6. Next the Deploy Plug-ins on Management Servers: Confirmation dialog box will appear. Note the information on the screen and click either Show Status to monitor the deployment status or click Ok to complete the deployment of the VMware vSphere Plug-in to the OMS.

Once the deployment to the Oracle Manager Server is completed we can move on to Deploying the Vmware vSphere Plug-in onto a EM12c Management Agent (OMA).

  1. From the EM12c Web UI, navigate to Setup -> Extensibility -> Plug-ins.
  2. Highlight the VMware Plug-in found in the Servers, Storage, and Network folder, and select Deploy On -> Oracle Management Agents
  3. The Deploy Plug-in on Management Agent dialog box will appear. Select the version to deploy and click Next.
  4. Next, select the Management Agent that has the plug-in was deployed to in the previous steps, and click Next.
  5. The Deploy Plug-in on Management Agent – Pre-requisite Checks dialog box will appear. Assuming all the Pre-Requisites have been verified, click Next. Otherwise, refer to the Troubleshooting section in the User Guide.
  6. Next, the the Deploy Plug-in on Management Agent – Review dialog box will appear. Click Deploy.
  7. Next the Deploy Plug-in on Management Agent – Confirmation dialog box will appear. Note the information on the screen and click either Show Status to monitor the deployment status or click Close to complete the deployment of the VMware vSphere Plug-in onto the Oracle Management Agent.
  8. In the example above, Show Status was selected. The Deployment Activities screen will appear and will allow you to monitor the deployment status of the Plug-in to the Management Agent. Refresh this panel in order to see Deployment move through the installation steps.

This concludes the part one of the blog series on installation and use of the Oracle Enterprise Manager Plugin for VMware. Stay tuned for part two for target discovery and promoting of VMware targets.
